Many consider Risk to be the first mainstream warboard game, simple and interesting enough to attract the attention of a wider audience than previous military simulation war games. In this strategy board game, each player tries to win the battle and conquer the country to increase his power and eventually conquer the world. The board game used for Risk is a simplified world map, consisting of 42 regions.

The origins of the board game Risk

The history of Risk begins in the 1950s, when French filmmaker Albert Lamorisse created a board game called “World Conquest”. At the time, the game was revolutionary, as it involved non-linear movements. As for most successful games, the rules of the game are quite easy to learn, but difficult strategies can be developed to win. A wider audience is familiar with this game thanks to the Parker brothers who published the game in 1959 with slight modifications under the name Risk.

Game basics

The world map used to play Risk groups the 42 regions into different continents and by controlling the entire continent, a player can become stronger by gaining additional troops. Just like in real war, players must invade their opponent’s territory and defend their own territory to conquer the world. The outcome of battles in the Risk board game is determined by the dice that is thrown, so there’s an element of luck included, just like in real combat. But as in real combat, the larger army had the advantage.

The classic version of Risk uses miniature soldiers, cavaliers, and cannons to represent troops of different sizes, but in the 2008 version, they have been replaced with more common arrow figures to bring the game closer to the contemporary world. Different types of soldiers only exist in some special editions of Risk, but not in the classic versions.

It is this game flexibility that makes the Risk board game one of the most popular board war games: the tactics to win over one player can be very different from that of another. The problem with many warboard games is that the strength of the strongest players increases exponentially and others can’t do anything to stop them. In Risk, negotiating and finding allies is a rather important part of the game. By uniting their power against the player who owns the entire continent, other players can conquer the territory of this continent to weaken it and prolong the game.

Many variations

There are many different ways to play the classic Risk board. For shorter games, players must complete missions to win the game. These missions include conquering certain continents or eliminating other players. For the longer version of the game, the winner must conquer the entire world. Another variation called Capital Risk is included in the official rulebook, where each player must choose a capital surreptitiously. To win the game, one has to capture a certain amount of capital. The universal form of the board game and the existence of different game pieces have also given the idea to warboard game enthusiasts to develop their own version of Risk. The different third-party rules range from slight game modifications, such as new types of wars, to completely different scenarios such as zombie attacks on the planet.

Being one of the best-selling war board games, Risk has many special editions. Risk: Lord of the Rings is playable on the Middle Earth map and includes both “light” and “dark” armies. Risk: 2210 is an award-winning futuristic version, which includes a special lead character and randomly placed natural disasters. Risks: Reinvention or Risk Factors include cities, capitals, and new mission types. The last version mentioned was released only in 2009 so fifty years after its creation, Risk is a warboard game that is still going strong.
